2010 Signature Shiraz | Rated 91

logo_wine_connoisseurs_guide.gif Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine - July 2013

"Here is a wine over which fans of hedonistic Syrahs are certain to swoon, and it is most assuredly anything but dainty. Its very ripe, broadly spicy, oak-enriched aromas literally blow from the glass, and its extravagant, highly concentrated flavors of dark berries, smoked meat, chocolate and caramel follow closely in measure and kind. There is no getting around the fact that it is a very big wine and one whose ample tannins need no fewer than five or six years of smoothing, but it is as deeply fruited as it is complex and powerful, and it is much more than a simple exercise in unrestrained ripeness."  2stars CGCW_1.gif  Rated 91

"The dense purple-hued 2008 Shiraz Signature reveals a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with blueberries, blackberries, spice and incense. Glorious richness, full-bodied opulence and a majestic, long finish result in one of the best Napa Valley Syrahs money can buy.  It should drink well for 6-10 years.  This offering must be of some personal satisfaction for proprietor Darioush Khaledi since the Shiraz grapes origin emanates from the ancient Persian empire." - Robert Parker

"It would be hard to imagine more oaky richness than comes in this massive, fully-ripened wine, and we would not argue with those who say it is a little too hard to find any clear-cut varietal character in between the wine's layers of caramel, sweet toast, cream and vanilla. We are, however, more than content in its fruity depth, and we are willing to wait for its five-to-ten-year tannins to soften before serving it up with well-seasoned meat stews and roasts."  Rated 91

"Smoky, charcoal and rich berry flavors have a sanguine edge, at points hinting at flesh yet clamping down with muscle-bound tannins.  Needs time and should reward, yet there's plenty of extracted fruit in this.  Best from 2014 through 2024.--J.L."

...we fully confess to being quite impressed by this absolutely opulent Syrah, and its amazing richness and fruity depth are compensation enough for its excesses. It is an immense wine by any and all standards, and it is bound overpower all but the most flavorful foods, yet over the next decade it is sure to shine with the likes of slow-cooked, garlicky lamb stews."  91 Points  | $68.

2stars CGCW_1.gif A highly distinctive wine. Likely to be memorable.

Very much draughted in the highly oaked and unabashedly ripe style that has become this winery's calling card, this most recent Syrah from Darioush is an immense and unrestrained wine that simply demands attention. For all of its bluster and sheer power, it maintains a remarkable focus on real Syrah fruit, and, while it may strike some as too much of a good thing, those who prefer Syrahs with uncompromising richness will find it a near-perfect partner to the likes of slow-simmered, melt-in-your mouth lamb shanks or short ribs of beef.  93 Points | $68

2004 Shiraz makes Robb Report Magazine's Best of the Best 2008

RRBestofBestJune2008.jpg"The Darioush Winery, as viewed from Napa Valley's Silverado Trail, suggests what one discovers at once when one tastes the wines: They are like nothing else from the region.  The recently completed winery complex resembles a temple of Persian travertine and tinted glass rising up from the valley floor.  The building is a fascinating amalgam of ancient motifs and cutting-edge technology--an apt expression, in many respects, of the personality of its owner, Darioush Khaledi, who founded the winery in 1997. Having grown up in the Shiraz region of Iran, where Syrah originated, Khaledi has always harvored a particular passion for this grape, and he brings to his winemaking project a deep sense of tradition, as well as an entrepreneur's enthusiasm for innovation.

The Darioush Signature Shiraz Napa Valley 2004 (www.darioush.com, $64) combines the essence of Shiraz-- earthiness and substantial structure-- with the ripeness and concentration that characterizes the wines of Napa. Indeed, the perfume of this intense red wine, redolent of plum and wild berries, is almost enough to satisfy on its own; but to merely nose this wine would be to deny oneself the pleasure of its complex, lush flavors and satiny texture. --B.A."
